- This Public Television documentary will trace this line's history from its conception, to its near abandonment, to becoming one of the most treasured tourist railroads in North America. Become part of Iowa's railroad history as you travel through the beautiful Des Moines River Valley, once home to Native Americans and later immigrants who hailed from the world over to build their lives in their newly adopted country.
Feel your senses heightened as you cross the legendary Bass Point Creek Bridge built in 1912. Enjoy breath taking views as you descend 200 feet into the Des Moines River Valley with the last built Mikado Steam locomotive, the Iowan, (JS 8419) which was purchased from the Datong Locomotive Works in China and brought to Boone in 1989. Your journey will stop at the coal mining area of Fraser and later climb back out of the valley and back to Boone for a one of a kind experience. You will experience all three forms of locomotive power Steam, Diesel, and Electric, along with meeting the men and women who help keep it all running and on the rails today.
We will also visit the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center which offers a detailed look at Iowa's Railroading history.
