At the height of the Fur Trade, Bent's Fort was an important trading post along the Santa Fe Trail--a commercial and cultural hub for Cheyenne and Arapahoe Plains Indians, American trappers, the US Army, explorers and settlers. It was abandoned in 1849 after a cholera epidemic and rebuilt elsewhere as Bent's New Fort.
