In the wake of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941, roughly 110,000 Japanese-Americans were relocated to internment camps across the US. Colorado Governor Ralph Carr, going against popular anti-Japanese sentiment, fought to bring a camp to Colorado where he felt its internees would be safe from harm. At its peak, Amache was Colorado's tenth-largest city.
